2024 WRC FIA points system

The WRC’s 2024 sports regulations, which contain the precise specifics of the new points system, were published by the FIA on 15.12.2023. The World Motor Sport Council in Baku approved the WRC’s adoption of a new scoring system, which will make the WRC events more exiting up the last day of competition.

The new approach will reward points on a sliding scale of 18-15-13-10-8-6-4-3-2-1 at the conclusion of Saturday’s final classification, but only if a crew completes the rally’s final classification on Sunday. The next best-placed crew will receive the Saturday points if a crew is unable to complete the stages of Sunday.

Championship points will be granted exclusively on the basis of Sunday’s performance in order to stop drivers from cruising through Sunday’s stages in preparation for the Power Stage at the end of the rally. The top seven competitors will receive the following points on a sliding scale: 7-6-5-4-3-2-1 for the Sunday run, and the Power Stage scoring will remain the same, with additional points awarded to the top five fastest drivers five points being the maximum for their efforts.

A crew will still receive 30 points overall if they finish a perfect rally, maintaining the former rules. Although a driver may theoretically win the rally even if they don’t score all seven points on Sunday, the rally winner will still be determined by overall time for the whole competition. Theoretically, another crew may surpass the rally winner in points.

Previously, points were given out according to the rally’s final outcome. With a sliding scale down to the 10th-place finisher who received just one point, the winner received 25 points. An additional bonus was offered by the Wolf Power Stage, raising the top score to thirty.

According to the FIA sporting regulations, “For the World Rally Championships for Manufacturers, for Drivers and for Co-Drivers, points will be awarded for each rally taking into account the general classification after Saturday (with all -time penalties accrued until and including the final time control on Saturday) according to the following scale 1st: 18 points 2nd: 15 points 3rd: 13 points 4th: 10 points 5th: 8 points 6th: 6 points 7th 4 points 8th: 3 points 9th: 2 points 10th: 1 point To score points, the crew must be classified in the Final Classification of the rally. If a crew is not classified in the Final Classification of the rally, the next Competitor(s) will be moved up to score points.” (Credit: 2024 FIA World Rally Championship Sporting Regulations.
